  • The Des Moines East and South Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit, member based organization that fosters and promotes business for its members.  We offer several internships throughout the year.  Please review the descriptions below and contact Sadie Trytten (President/CEO) if you are interested or have questions.

     

    Internship Overview:

    Our internship program provides opportunities for candidates to hone their skills in a professional atmosphere, while building lasting relationships that could lead to future employment. Interns gain exposure to our members and services, as well as the company's organizational structure and business practices. Internships may be geared toward specific interests or class credit requirements. Our program enables candidates to develop marketable skills in a real life professional environment, network with professionals in their fields of interest and explore career options.

    We are seeking interns to work 15-30 hours per week with our staff and committee members either remotely or at our chamber office. As part of a small and busy team, this is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in business, marketing, public relations, graphic design, web site design, hospitality, tourism, event planning, and technology.

     

    Time Commitment:

    Time is flexible, but we would prefer 15-30 hours per week for at least 3 months. Our office hours are Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Internships are unpaid; however, students could receive college credit through their institution.

     

    Responsibilities:

    Internships and applicable duties may be geared toward specific interests or class credit requirements.  Interns would work with the appropriate office staff on ongoing projects and/or special events.  Interns will also assist with day-to-day duties, such as answering phones and preparing for daily meetings and events.

     

    Qualifications:

    We are seeking self-motivated and energetic candidates with strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with media, organizations and the public.  Candidates should also have strong PC Skills:  MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook preferred, excellent customer service skills, superior time management skills, and the ability to work independently and on a team, and applicable skills depending on the intern position.

     

    Specific internships are set out below.

     

    SPECIAL EVENTS INTERN

    The Special Intern reports to Sadie Trytten (President/CEO), and works closely with each of the key event task forces as well as other DMESC staff. The ability to work collaboratively and creatively within a distributed organization is vital to this position.


    Initiatives include working with members on sponsorships, donations, auctions, food vendors, coordinating events and much more. Works successfully independently and on a team. The ideal candidate will represent DMESC's events committee as needed or assigned.

    Position Responsibilities

    *    Help in planning and implementing events
    *    Assist with phone calls and mailings to past and current participants, potential sponsors/volunteers
    *    Assist with cold-calling and donation tasks
    *    Assist with day-of-event volunteer recruitment and management (includes attending event)
    *    Attend committee meetings
    *    Attend promotional events as necessary - occasional night or weekend hours
    *    Utilize social networks to promote events
    *    Design basic flyers, handouts, etc.
    *    Must have an automobile and ability to lift up to 25 lbs. (Gas and expense reimbursement)
    *    Other duties as assigned

     

    GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERN

    The Des Moines East and South Chamber of Commerce (DMESC) Graphic Design Intern reports to Sadie Trytten (President/CEO), and works closely with the marketing and public relations committee as well as other DMESC staff. The ability to work collaboratively and creatively within a distributed organization is vital to this position.  Candidate must be proficient with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop).


    Initiatives include creating and updating files to promote the chamber and events. Works successfully independently and on a team. The ideal candidate will assist DMESC's marketing and public relations committee as needed or assigned.

    Position Responsibilities

    *    Design materials that support the efforts of the sales and marketing team
    *    Update design files (newsletters, brochures, flyers, direct mail, logos and other design projects as needed)
    *    Create logos, web banners, flyers, brochure and more as needed
    *    Work with members on collecting logos as needed to market their business and sponsorships
    *    Update website information as needed to promote events and the chamber
    *    Provides a high level of customer service including building strong relationships with members and non-members and responds to inquiries
    *    May assist in administrative tasks related to marketing and public relations (web banners, logos on the chamber website and more)
    *    Works with other staff or contractors on sales/solicitations of various DMESC programs and opportunities
    *    Works in conjunction with other DMESC staff to determine effectiveness of campaigns
    *    Demonstrate a commitment to diversity in the workplace
    *    Other duties as assigned

     

    MARKETING AND SOCIAL MEDIA INTERN

    The Marketing and Social Media Intern reports to Sadie Trytten (President/CEO), and works closely with the marketing and public relations committee as well as other DMESC staff. The ability to work collaboratively and creatively within a distributed organization is vital to this position.  Candidate must have the ability to rapidly learn and use new software, and be proficient in a wide-range of social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

    Initiatives will include managing a social media calendar and conducting pre and post event publicity on social media platforms. The ideal candidate works successfully independently and on a team, and will assist DMESC's marketing and public relations committee as needed or assigned.

    Position Responsibilities

    *    Post updates, photos and videos on social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn)
    *    Update website information as needed to promote events
    *    Provides a high level of customer service including building strong relationships with members and non-members and responds to inquiries
    *    May assist in administrative tasks related to marketing and public relations (web banners, logos on the chamber website and more)
    *    Performs administrative tasks in order to compile, analyze and process website and social media analytics and report back to the committee and possibly the board
    *    Take video and photos at events as needed
    *    Works with other staff or contractors on sales/solicitations of various DMESC programs and opportunities
    *    Works in conjunction with other DMESC staff to determine effectiveness of campaigns
    *    Demonstrate a commitment to diversity in the workplace
    *    Other duties as assigned

     

    MEMBERSHIP INTERN

    The Membership Intern reports to Sadie Trytten (President/CEO), and works closely with the membership committee as well as other DMESC staff. The ability to work collaboratively and creatively within a distributed organization is vital to this position.

    Initiatives include soliciting new memberships and establishing and maintaining strong relationships with non-members. Meet or exceed sales projections for various programs/projects as assigned. Establish relationships with potential members and sponsors and participate in recruiting as assigned. Works successfully independently and on a team. The ideal candidate will represent DMESC's evolving sales and program offerings as needed or assigned.

    Position Responsibilities

    *    Solicits new memberships primarily by phone, email, and in person and coordinates new members with ambassadors
    *    Provides a high level of customer service, including building strong relationships with members and non-members and responds to inquiries
    *    In conjunction with other staff, identifies new target lists for campaigns
    *    Represents DMESC and conducts in-person outreach at events, one-on-one meetings and other opportunities (may include conferences, meetings and seminars and/or planning and coordination of outreach)
    *    Performs administrative tasks related to membership and payment processing
    *    Tracks interactions with customers in ChamberMaster to produce membership and other reports on the experiences of members and prospects
    *    Proofs and updates membership communications
    *    Supports marketing efforts via coordination and execution of marketing initiatives as assigned
    *    Participates in promotion of DMESC membership, professional development, programs and other opportunities
    *    Works with other staff or contractors on sales/solicitations of various DMESC programs and opportunities
    *    Understands DMESC programs and other offerings
    *    Utilizes membership committee to track and organize renewal campaigns
    *    Works in conjunction with other DMESC staff to determine effectiveness of campaigns
    *    Demonstrates a commitment to diversity in the workplace
    *    Other duties as assigned


    Location
    The Membership Coordinator Intern will work from a remote location and meet as need at the DMESC office and with the membership committee and chair as needed.

    Hours & Compensation
    This internship is compensated financially based on memberships brought in monthly.

    Travel Requirements
    Occasional travel is required locally for this position. Travel expenses are compensated through the commission payment of the position. There is no direct mileage compensation at this time.
